Our Uniform
School uniform is widely considered to promote an effective work ethic, putting children into the right frame of mind to learn. Uniform helps to take away distractions that may be caused by other pupils’ clothing, accessories or hairstyles. At Tany’s Dell, we celebrate our differences and individuality through children’s talents, skills, relationships, determination and successes. Therefore, all pupils from Nursery upwards will be expected to wear the full school uniform clearly labelled with their name. To purchase items with the school logo on please visit Top Form located at The Stow in Harlow (please also see the link at the bottom of the page)
Pre-loved uniform items
We support the use of pre-loved items. Clean school uniform items that are no longer required and are in good condition, can be donated to the school. These items will be made available to families who need them.

JEWELLERY, MAKE UP AND NAIL POLISH
Pupils are not allowed to wear make-up or nail polish. Children are allowed to wear a watch (Smart Watches are not permitted). Children who have their ears pierced are permitted to wear small stud earrings, but no earrings are allowed on days when the child has PE. No other jewellery is permitted. We reserve the right to ask your child to remove any jewellery before PE lessons. Ear piercing should only take place at the beginning of the Summer holidays, to ensure the healing process is completed by September. It is illegal for children under the age of 13 years to have piercings other than ears – therefore no other body piercing is permitted. The school can take no responsibility for items worn or brought to school or any accident caused through the wearing of any item of jewellery.
Hair
Our school has high standards for our uniform and appearance of its pupils. We value inclusivity and diversity, while maintaining a supportive learning environment. Children’s hairstyles contribute to their overall appearance and as such, are part of the school uniform. Cultural and religious hair practices are respected and permitted. The headteacher has had to remind parents about maintaining a suitable hairstyle for their child at school, especially with regards to hair dye, extensions and ‘creative shaving’ - all of which are not allowed. Pupils with long hair are expected to tie it back, as this keeps hair out of children’s eyes, which can often distract them in their learning. This also helps us with our fight against head lice. Hair should be kept off the face by using appropriate clips or bands. Bows should not exceed 8cm, and colourful bows / headbands are not permitted.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The children also spend at least 1½ hours outside during the school day. They should therefore have a warm coat and hood for the winter and a sunhat for the summer.
ALL items of uniform MUST be clearly labelled with your child’s name. School staff cannot be responsible for reuniting un-labelled items of clothing with their rightful owner. Your co-operation in this matter is very much appreciated.
Worn correctly, uniform conveys a positive image to the general public and can help to instil a sense of pride and of belonging to a community or organisation. Research has also shown that pupils, on the whole, are better prepared to work and learn when dressed in uniform: rather than casual clothes that are also worn during leisure time. Your help and co-operation in ensuring that you child is suitably dressed for school each day is very much appreciated.
