Admissions

Tany’s Dell Primary School and Nursery has an annual admission number of 60 pupils.  All children are admitted full-time at the beginning of the Autumn term.  In the first weeks of the term, there is a staggered start for the pupils to enable them to settle in and become familiar with their new surroundings and routines.  Parents are informed of these arrangements in their admission letter.

The Local Authority co-ordinates the school's applications for the normal admissions round and further information can be found at Essex Schools Admissions.

Reception Intake

The DfE have published a new guide for parents, produced by Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre. ‘What to Expect in the Early Years Foundation Stage’ (formerly ‘What to Expect When’) guides parents through what to expect with their child’s development. It aligns with the new Development Matters to help practitioners engage with parents about their child’s development.

Parents of new entrants will be invited to bring their children to attend an induction session before starting full-time during the term prior to their admission.  This will provide an opportunity for parents and children to see the school, to meet the teacher and to spend some time in the class.

Admission Criteria for Tany’s Dell Primary School and Nursery

There is no guarantee of a place for children living in the priority admission area.  In the event of oversubscription places will be allocated using the following criteria in the order given:

  1. Looked After Children;
  2. Children of staff at the school
  3. Children with a sibling attending the school;
  4. Children living in the priority admission area*;
  5. Children living within the shortest distance from the school
  6. Remaining applications.

* Formally known as the catchment area

In the event of oversubscription within any of the above criteria, priority will be determined by straight line distance from home to school, those living closest being given the highest priority.

Notification of place allocations will be given by Essex County Council Planning and Admissions Department and sent before the term of admission.  Parents dissatisfied with the decision of Essex County Council made in line with the admissions policy and criteria have a right of appeal to an Appeals Committee established by the Local Authority who will conduct the appeal.

The school holds a waiting list which will be used should a vacancy occur within the class.  You can register your interest with the school after you have received confirmation of your application from Essex County Council.  We will hold these until 31 December each year.  You are required to update us each term if you still wish to be on the register thereafter.

Mid-Year Applications

All mid-year applications should be made directly to the school, using the mid-year application form available here.  This should be completed and returned to the school either by post or e-mail to parents@tanysdell.essex.sch.uk Mid-year applications (sometimes called in-year applications) are any application for a school place made to a year group, apart from September admissions to Reception (for primary schools)

For applications into existing year groups, a place will be offered when the number of pupils in the relevant year group is below the admission number for that year group.

Please note: if a mid-year application is received during a school holiday period, we will respond as soon as possible when the school reopens.

For pupils transferring during the academic year, arrangements can be made to visit the school by appointment with the Headteacher who will be pleased to see parents, show them the school and provide further information.  Please see the virtual tour above in the interim.

Our Nursery currently offers 15 hour and 30 hour funded places.  If you wish to apply for a nursery place for your child, our Nursery admissions policy can be found here.  Please complete the following application form if you would like to apply for a place in our Nursery. NURSERY APPLICATION FORM
